The process

Five steps, and most of the work is just remembering.

You bring what you know about your hero. We handle the writing, the illustration and the printing — and nothing goes to press until you have read every page and said yes.

Before you start

You need less than you think.

There is no form to download and no records to request. If you know roughly who they were and where they served, that is enough to begin — you can add detail later, and you can stop and come back whenever you like.

Helpful to have on hand

  • Their branch or department, and roughly when they served
  • Rank or role, if you know it
  • One clear photograph of their face
  • A couple of stories you have heard them tell
  • Names of the family who should appear in it

Anything you cannot answer can be skipped. We write around what you give us rather than guessing at the rest.

What actually happens

  1. 01

    Answer the questions

    About 10 minutes

    A guided questionnaire that adapts to who your hero is. Choose military, veteran, firefighter, law enforcement, EMS, another first responder, or a memorial book, and the questions change to match — branch or department, rank, years of service, assignments, the units and stations that mattered.

    A firefighter is never asked their MOS. Every hero type has its own questions, its own vocabulary and its own illustration references, so nothing you are asked feels borrowed from someone else's service.

    Upload a photograph

    Two minutes

    One clear photo of your hero is all we need. It anchors their likeness so the same face carries through every illustration in the book, rather than a different stranger appearing on each page.

    What makes a good one: front-facing, good light, face clearly visible, not too small. Add more if you have them — a uniform shot, the station, the apparatus, family photographs. The more we can see, the more the details are right.

  3. 03

    Fill out the story

    20–30 minutes

    Take as many sittings as you like. This is the part a form cannot ask for. Why they joined. What they remember about training. The people who made it bearable. The accomplishment they are proudest of, and the moment they still laugh about. In your words, at whatever length it deserves.

    This is the step worth doing with them. Most families find it turns into the conversation they had been meaning to have for years. Your progress saves as you go, so you can stop mid-sentence and pick it up next weekend.

  4. 04

    Review the illustrations

    Draft ready the same day

    We write the narrative and illustrate every page in the style you picked, at the reading level you chose. Then you see all of it — every page, every picture — before anything is final.

    Nothing is locked. Reword any page. Regenerate any illustration, as many times as it takes. If the uniform is wrong or the ship is the wrong class, say so and we fix it.

  5. 05

    Approve and submit

    7–12 business days to your door

    Give the finished proof your approval and submit it for creation. Your book is printed on quality stock, bound as a hardcover, and shipped to you — with a digital copy the whole family can keep and read on any screen.

    You pay nothing until this point. The questionnaire, the draft, the illustrations and every revision are free. Payment comes when you approve the proof — and you can reorder copies for relatives any time from your Client Portal.

Timing

Start on a Sunday, hold it in a fortnight.

Most of the calendar time is printing and shipping. The part that needs you takes about an hour, and none of it has to happen in one go.

We do not invent a single medal.

Getting the uniform wrong is not a small thing. Neither is getting the badge, the rank or the year wrong. Decorations appear only when you tell us about them, insignia and uniforms are matched to the branch and period of service you give us, and departments and units are named properly.

If something on the proof is not right, it does not print. That is the whole of the promise.
